Subject outline

In this subject students will build on the linguistic skills developed in FRE4008 French 8, enabling them to attain a B2 level in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CECR). Emphasis will be placed on improving students' fluency through a range of oral exercises and discussions. Written and oral expression will be developed through specific grammatical exercises, textual analysis, presentation and essay writing. The cultural component this semester is a detailed study of two 20th century autobiographies by Nathalie Sarraute and Georges Perec. In class we will question the tradition of French autobiography in the late 20th century, focus on the generic properties of autobiographical texts, their transformation over time, learn how to read an autobiography and to what end.
