Subject outline

In this subject you will gain an insight into the type of tasks you are likely to undertake as a professional within the financial planning industry. The subject will have a strong practical focus and you will be exposed to a range of the more common strategies used in the workplace. As well as covering off on the core knowledge expectations, there will be an emphasis on developing skills in analysis and critical thinking as well as in the interpersonal skills required to appropriately deal with and satisfy the needs of a client. This subject is focused on extending and applying the knowledge and skills introduced in other related subjects such as Introduction to Financial Planning, Taxation and Principles of Retirement and Estate Planning, to practical problems presented via a case study methodology. You will also cover the legislative and ethical considerations in compiling a financial plan or Statement of Advice (SOA). The primary focus is on developing a strong foundation in financial planning for those who intend to pursue a career in the financial services or financial planning industry.

01. Outline and apply the legal and regulatory requirements applying to the financial planning process and the 6-step financial planning process, in accordance with Financial Planning Standards Board FPSB standards and ethical practice.
02. Analyse and critically evaluate an advanced set of client circumstances as they apply to satisfying the needs, risk profile and goals of a client.
03. Research, model, evaluate and apply a range of advanced financial planning strategies appropriate for different economic circumstances and individual client needs, risk profiles and goals in an ethical and professional manner.
04. Develop interview and questioning techniques and communication skills to assist in ascertaining needs, risk profile, goals of a client and in building client relationships according to industry standards.
05. Develop and facilitate teamwork skills as they relate to developing financial, superannuation, retirement and estate planning, recommendations and strategies according to industry standards.
06. Construct and present a compliance Statement of Advice, detailing and explaining appropriate financial, superannuation, retirement and estate planning strategies according to industry standards.
