Subject outline

This subject covers integration of design, engineering, and management disciplines in the modern manufacturing enterprises. Emphasis is given to the physics and stochastic nature of manufacturing processes and systems, and their effect on quality, rate, cost and flexibility. Students will learn the fundamental principles of engineering mass production in manufacturing environments, as it relates to modern industry and will be able to facilitate the steps and processes required to take products from design to production. Topics will include: Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCGs), design for mass manufacture, design for assembly, process optimization, economies of scale and sustainability, standardization, organisation of work hierarchies and supply chains. Market push-pull strategies and 'Just in Time' manufacture will also be covered. Examples will be drawn from the automotive industry, FMCGs, electronics and the medical products industry.
