Subject outline

In this subject Pre-service teachers establish a grounding in the teaching of Primary Humanities (F-6/7). By exploring the traditions of knowledge within the Humanities disciplines of History, Geography, Civics and Citizenship and Economics Pre-service teachers will develop an understanding of dominant pedagogical methods. This subject asks Pre-service teachers to consider the role of Humanities skills in the twenty-first century. Using the Digital Technologies framework, pre-service teachers explore the various means by which digital technology skills can be enhanced through contemporary technologies and multimodal literacy.

01. Demonstrate an understanding of the key concepts of primary humanities, informed by theory and research, to apply to a range of teaching and learning contexts across the domains of history, geography, civics and citizenship and economics and business
02. Critically analyse and apply inquiry learning approaches and core skills, such as critical thinking, problem solving, research, communication, historical and spatial thinking, in the design of Primary Humanities curriculum, teaching and assessment
03. Demonstrate cultural competence and understanding of Australia's first nations peoples in relation to key concepts in the humanities, including awareness of events and places that have historic, cultural and geographic significance
04. Apply digital, information and media literacies to effectively engage learning in the Humanities to a diverse student cohorts
05. Identify, plan and critically evaluate a range of practical and theoretical teaching, learning and assessment activities, programs and resources for effectively teaching and integrating Humanities learning across the curriculum
