Subject outline

This subject is designed to develop a strong knowledge base for pre-service teachers in the areas of curriculum, pedagogy and assessment in visual arts and design education for secondary students in the senior years. The subject provides pre-service teachers with a firm understanding of the continuum of the visual arts and design curriculum across learning stages. The subject will emphasise planning sequences of learning and provide opportunities to examine complex learning theories to better understand contemporary concepts and issues in visual arts and design education. These theoretical dimensions will platform the skills and knowledge needed to apply effective curriculum, assessment and pedagogy in visual arts and design for the senior secondary context.

Intended Learning Outcomes

01. Generate and critically evaluate a visual arts education curriculum program for senior students, which synthesises a variety of pedagogical approaches, assessment tasks, curriculum content; and resources, appropriate to these year levels.
02. Critically analyse, synthesise, develop and implement a variety of research informed classroom strategies, which cater for individual differences in student learning (e.g. differences informed by cognitive, physical, socioeconomic, cultural, linguistic and religious diversity and integrate general capabilities and cross curriculum priorities for the visual arts and design classroom.
03. Analyse the relationships between learning task design, learning expertise, higher order thinking, assessment, feedback and reporting strategies and evaluation in visual arts and design education, and apply to the development of your own teaching practice.
04. Critically analyse and articulate the relationship of assessment to intervention strategies, student learning and high stakes assessment, moderation and examination practices in Visual Arts Education, and interpret student assessment data to evaluate and modify student learning and teaching practice.
