Subject outline

This subject focuses on the key features of the Australian Vocational Education and Training System as they influence and shape the work of teachers, trainers and learners. These features include the development of the industry-driven VET system currently in place, the development of training packages and industry-endorsed competencies and the primacy of workplace competence. Attention is paid to the variety of settings in which VET occurs, with particular consideration of the workplace delivery and assessment of education and training. The content of the subject includes the competencies required by the Australian National Training Authority to qualify individuals in the Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAA40104). Students should seek advice from the University Academic Co-ordinator of the course to confirm specific modules of the Certificate IV that are required in order to be eligible for credit for this subject.

Intended Learning Outcomes

01. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of how VET programs are run within secondary schools. Show understanding of how VET programs relate to Senior secondary certificates, such as VCE VET programs, VCAL, scored assessment, Block credit programs and School based apprenticeships and traineeships (SBATs).
02. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the Australian national VET system. Including the quality systems, the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF), Registered Training Organisations, Qualifications, Training packages, Units of competency, and Recognition of prior learning (RPL).
03. Critically analyse, plan, synthesise and implement a range of vocational learning and teaching activities and sequences for senior secondary students (Years 10-12). These include a variety of pedagogical approaches and resources (including safe and ethical pedagogy and use of resources including ICT appropriate to state and national curricula.
