Subject outline

This subject focusses on the importance of early intervention in the identification of individual student's exceptional abilities and learning difference in mathematical concepts. Pre Service Teachers (PSTs) will interpret multiple methods of numeracy assessment tools to identify and understand individual difficulties with mathematical concepts and numeracy skills. PSTs will apply teaching strategies that are responsive to a variety of learning differences evident when students engage with the learning of mathematical concepts and will explore teaching strategies that differentiate the way the curriculum is taught to accommodate for a variety of learning abilities in mathematics. PSTs will enhance and extend their teaching skills to develop individualised learning goals and teaching strategies for students with learning differences in mathematics, evaluating teaching programs to improve learning.

Intended Learning Outcomes

01. Differentiate your teaching practice for students with different learning styles and abilities in mathematics and apply these skills in a range of different mathematical curriculum areas Your skills in primary school teaching practice will be extended through the identification and assessment of atypical mathematical skills, with a particular focus on numeracy abilities within the Australian Curriculum and Victorian Curriculum .
02. Interpret, analyse and apply data from multiple methods of mathematical assessment tools to assist individualised planning, teaching strategies and interventions for a variety of abilities in mathematics, including advanced teaching strategies for students with advanced levels of mathematical understanding. This will also include collaboration with the student and/or parents/caregivers to negotiate and justify the use of mathematical teaching strategies.
03. Modify your teaching practice and create effective lesson plans and sequences to develop and implement numeracy strategies for students with numeracy difficulties and / or high functioning numeracy and mathematical skills in a primary school context.
