Subject outline

In this subject, students will observe students and teachers at work and undertake supervised teaching practice in order to gain insight into what is involved in school-based teaching in specific method areas. Students are placed in a school for 15 days under the supervision of a qualified teacher. During this placement they will teach a minimum of ten classes in the second of their method areas, and will spend the remainder of the time in observation, tutoring and other associated duties. They will be expected to explore the texts and materials that are used in their subject area, the different ways in which teachers and students approach the unit, the level of engagement of students, the ways in which student work is assessed and the level of resourcing of this unit area in the school. Prior to commencement of the compulsory professional placement students will attend two 3-hour campus-based lecture/seminars to prepare for it.
