Subject outline

This subject introduces students to a spectrum of algebraic thinking and skills required for future learning in general university programs. Students will be enabled to solve a variety of mathematical and algebraic problems using appropriate strategies, methods and techniques and to apply algebraic concepts and knowledge to different real world situations. Assessments tasks are based on cumulative development of skills and include online quizzes and one project task.

01. Recognise and represent expressions using algebraic language and apply the rule of algebra in substitution and simplification of expressions
02. Use simple indices, square roots, brackets, alternative conventions for division and signed numbers to express, interpret and solve formula, rules and equations
03. Explain the reasoning, arguments and strategies involved in solving algebraic problems and recognise incorrect reasoning
04. Identify that a problem or situation may be represented and solved with algebraic concepts and rules
