Subject outline

In this subject, students will learn how to use microeconomic techniques to analyse various issues related to health and health care. These techniques will be used to analyse some of the major issues confronting the Australian health care system. The topics that might be covered include trends in population health and expenditure on health care, the nature of the commodity health care, health care as an input in the production of good health, the demand for health care and its relationship with the demand for health insurance, the supply of health care, the financing of health care, agency issues in health care and the regulation of health care, as well as the use of cost-benefit analysis and cost-effectiveness analysis in health economics.
