Subject outline

This subject introduces you to the professional practice of dentistry/oral health with an emphasis on foundational skills and knowledge. You will be introduced to the preclinical dental simulation laboratory and will begin to develop skills and knowledge that will later be applied to preventive, periodontal and restorative procedures. The scope of dental practice, law, ethics and working safely are covered. By the end of the subject, you will be expected to have achieved basic level competency in preclinical skills including infection control, occupational health and safety, the selection and management of specific dental instruments and materials, non-surgical periodontal instrumentation techniques, and the use of rotary and hand instruments. You will acquire basic skills in interviewing dental patients and acquiring and recording patient information relevant to the oral health care process. You will also begin to appreciate the complex interplay between the social environment and the oral health of individuals and groups .

Intended Learning Outcomes

01. Explain the importance of, and undertake basic information data collection required in the oral health care process
02. Demonstrate the safe and effective use of hand and rotary instruments in a simulated dental environment.
03. Identify the determinants of health and describe the principles of disease prevention to support behavioural and environmental changes to optimise oral and general health
04. Undertake basic dental procedures including the application of infection control and principles of occupational health and safe practice in simulated and controlled clinical environments.
05. Discuss the legislation relevant to dental practice, including scope of practice for dental practitioners in Australia, and describe the relevant codes of conduct with relation to patient rights, professional behaviour and complaints procedures
06. Create and manage dental records according to guidelines/regulations using multiple technologies
07. Deliver planned oral health promotion/health education interventions to individuals and groups
08. Identify basic dental materials/agents and describe their use in the maintenance/promotion of oral health
