Subject outline

In this subject you will develop understanding of determinants of health and oral health. You will develop skills in preventing oral diseases by learning principles of diseases prevention and oral health promotion. . You will learn epidemiology of caries and periodontal disease and other common oral diseases. You will analyse Australia's National Oral Health Plan with enquiry into the oral health needs of identified high risk groups. In this subject you will also learn the oral health care system in Australia and evaluate health care policies and workforce.

Intended Learning Outcomes

01. Discuss the principles of dental public health including the epidemiological and social trends of oral health in Australia and internationally.
02. Discuss the risk of oral diseases and critically analyse evidence based preventive care as part of a comprehensive treatment plan.
03. Describe the determinants of health and oral health, with particular reference to the impact of inequality, and the public health strategies by which to address it.
04. Describe the theories and principles of health promotion, apply them in terms of the changing environment, community and individual behaviours to deliver oral and general health gain.
05. Describe and critique the Australian oral healthcare systems including oral health policy, workforce and delivery of oral healthcare.
06. Explain the principles of planning oral health care for communities and populations to meet needs and demands for better oral health.
