Subject outline

This subject focuses on an in-depth analysis of local area networks. Shared media technologies such as Ethernet, Token Ring, and Token Bus are discussed to provide the historical context of the development of LANs. The switched LAN technologies, which is the currently dominating family of technologies (Ethernet 10 Mbps, Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet), is then explored in detail. The study of switched LANs include configuration of virtual LANs, and Spanning Tree Protocol. There is an emphasis on the performance aspects of LANs. The last section of the subject studies the relationship and connectivity of a LAN to a wider internet through bridges, switches and routers.

Intended Learning Outcomes

01. Analyse legacy LAN protocols in terms of operation and correctness.
02. Analyse switched LAN (Ethernet 10 Mbps, Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet protocols in terms of operation and performance.
03. Evaluate performance of LANs through modelling and simulation
04. Analyse the relationship, and design the interfaces, of a LAN with the rest of a wider internet to which it belongs
