Subject outline

This subject introduces students to the field of transportation engineering through a variety of contemporary topics, including transport systems and transport modes, traffic flow fundamentals, traffic flow theory, analysis of unsignalized intersections, roundabouts, and signalized intersections, capacity and level of service, transport survey, and transport modelling. Public transport and non-motorised transport are discussed along with intelligent transport systems. Road safety issues and counter measures are also considered. Engineers Australia stage 1 competencies covered in this subject are: 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.5, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 3.2 and 3.6.

Intended Learning Outcomes

01. Evaluate transport system characteristics and issues for different transport modes.
02. Apply the fundamentals of traffic flow to solve real-world problems.
03. Evaluate capacity of unsignalized intersections and roundabouts, and design traffic signal timings for signalised intersections.
04. Design and undertake transport surveys, and analyse the survey data.
05. Identify and implement suitable techniques for various transport modelling tasks.
