MEDICINAL AND ORGANIC CHEMISTRY

CHE2MOC

2020

Credit points: 15

Subject outline

In this subject you will be introduced to medicinal chemistry, with an emphasis on how drugs interact with their molecular targets of lipids, carbohydrates, nucleic acids and proteins. A key aspect is to develop understanding of organic chemistry, where you will focus on the properties, nomenclature, reactions and mechanisms of key functional groups used in organic synthesis, including the critical concept of stereochemistry. You will gain experience conducting and interpreting laboratory experiments related to the synthesis of organic and molecules with a focus on medicinal drug design.
