Subject outline

This subject is an introduction to the equine industry, its structure, operations and business models. It describes the scope and components of the equine industry and identifies the attributes of a range of equine enterprises. Students will be introduced to the safe work practices necessary when working with horses and equine equipment within the industry, especially when handling horses and managing animals. The subject develops students' knowledge to identify the healthy horse, resources to maintain health and commonly used feed stuffs. Recognition and practice in the use of equipment used in the equine sector is undertaken in workshops. Students will develop specialised skills in planning for horse husbandry undertaken by equine specialists including farriers and dentists. In this subject, students will gain experience working with live animals.
