Remote desktop connections

A Remote Desktop Connection connects two computers over a network or the Internet. Once connected, you'll see the remote computer's desktop as if you were sitting right in front of it, and have access to all its programs and files.

Windows to Windows

To access a La Trobe computer remotely, you need to be a member of the Remote Desktop Users group on the La Trobe computer. If you are not a member of this group or are not sure, please contact the ICT Service Desk on x1500.

  1. Connect the VPN.
  2. Click the Start button and select All Programs.
  3. Click Accessories.
  4. Click Remote Desktop Connection.
  5. Enter the Computer Name e.g. 5ZWF42S.ltu.edu.au for the computer you wish to connect to and click Connect.
To locate your computer name:
  1. Click on Start button.
  2. Right-click on Computer.
  3. Click on Properties.
You can find your computer name under Computer name, domain, and workgroup settings.

Mac OS to Windows

To access a La Trobe computer remotely, you need to be a member of the Remote Desktop Users group on the La Trobe computer. If you are not a member of this group or are not sure, please contact the ICT Service Desk on x1500.

  1. Connect the VPN.
  2. Click Go and select Applications.
  3. Double-click Remote Desktop Connection. If Remote Desktop Connection is unavailable, you will first need to download and install Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection for Mac.
  4. Enter the Computer Name e.g. 5ZWF42S.ltu.edu.au for the computer you wish to connect to and click Connect.
To locate the computer name on your La Trobe Windows computer:
  1. Click on the Start button.
  2. Right-click on Computer.
  3. Click on Properties.
You can find your computer name under Computer name, domain, and workgroup settings.

Mac OS to Mac OS

To remote connect from Mac OS to Mac OS you will need to purchase and install additional software from a third party provider on both computers.

Note: To remote connect to a University computer off-site, you may need to adjust your power management settings before you leave campus.
