Subject outline
This subject prepares students for clinical practice in dealing with patients who present with medical conditions such as diabetes mellitus, and various disorders that affect circulation and sensation to the lower limb and foot and places them at increased risk of complications. Through exploration of the pathophysiological processes involved in development of the clinical complications, including chronic ulceration, serious infection and lower limb amputaton, caused by altered vascular, neurological and/or mechanical status, students will gain skill in applying knowledge and evidence to clinical cases. Management of wounds that often occur in these high-risk feet is emphasised. In this subject, students will engage with online resources, published journal articles, case studies and face-to-face workshops to aquire skills and knowledge of the high-risk foot.

Prerequisites Must have passed all subjects from (HBS2PAT, POD4PAM, POD4PPC). Must be admitted in one of the following courses: HZHPOD, HZHPDB, HZHPDM, HZHPDS, HZHPDW - Bachelor of Health Sciences and Master of Podiatric Practice, or HZLLPP, Bachelor of Applied Science and Master of Podiatric Practice.Or admission in HMPOD, HMPODB - Master of Podiatric Practice.

01. Analyze the physical, psychological and social effects for patients, their family and community, of foot and lower limb complications that can arise from diabetes mellitus, neurological disorders and vascular disorders of relevance.

02. Generate assessments required for a diagnosis of a patient and, given the results, evaluate the patient and classify their risk of developing serious foot-related complications from diabetes-mellitus, and neurological and vascular disorders of relevance.

03. Synthesize and analyze an initial and ongoing case management plan for a patient.

04. Synthesize and analyze wound management on chronic ulceration of the foot and ankle for a given patient.
