Subject outline

Students commence a project that takes the equivalent of six months of continuous work under the supervision of a member of staff. The project is completed and written up as a thesis when the student completes the unit PHY5THB. All students are required to present a seminar outlining the proposed project at a time to be determined by the physics postgraduate coordinator.

Subject rules

Prerequisites Must be admitted in one of the following courses: SZHSMN, SMNT, PSMSC, SZHSN. Students admitted in PSMSC and SMNT must achieve an average of 65% in all their subjects over 120 CP of subjects completed in the first year of the course. SMNT and PSMSC students require Course Coordinator approval.

Special conditions This subject is the first part of a 60CP thesis program (PHY5THA and PHY5THB). Students will not be given a final mark until they complete PHY5THB. Students must demonstrate sufficient competence in a laboratory setting to satisfy the lab supervisor that they are safe to commence work in that laboratory.

01. Assess and interpret the scientific literature relevant to a chosen topic in some depth and plan and execute a scientific investigation in a research environment supported by a member of staff.

Activities:
Students commence a project that takes the equivalent of six months of continuous work under the supervision of a member of staff. The project is completed and written up as a thesis when the student completes the subject PHY5THB.

02. Communicate effectively the key concepts, techniques, and research outcomes associated with the research project in an appropriate scientific manner.

Activities:
Prepare and deliver an individual audio visual presentation of approximately 20 minutes in duration before an audience of scientists working in a relevant discipline, summarising the research project. Answer questions about the research project in a professional manner.
