Subject outline
In this subject, students will be introduced to the normal birth process. Using a primary health care philosophy, students will develop attributes and skills for providing woman-centred midwifery care during labour and birth. Using contemporary evidenced based guidelines this subject provides the opportunity for students to develop assessment skills and an understanding of the progress of labour. Students will build on the development of therapeutic relationships and work in partnership with women and their families to support them in the normal birth process. The students will further develop their knowledge of anatomy and physiology and psychological concepts. The learning approach used will enable students to develop reflective, evidence based practice within the scope of practice of a midwife.

Special conditions This subject has been designed to be taken in conjunction with NSG2ANA. Students should enrol in MID2CLB and NSG2ANA in the same semester. Any alterations from this course plan are to be discussed with your Course Coordinator for approval.
Graduate capabilities & intended learning outcomes
01. Support and educate women throughout the labour and birth continuum in partnership with the woman and her family
- Activities:
- Face to face lectures. Small group work/ tutorial based activities Students will be on clinical placement for 4 weeks (160 hours) within a maternity care setting where labour and birth care is provided, following the completion of the teaching period of the subject. Students will work alongside mentoring midwives providing labour and birth care to women. They will consolidate their learning and work toward supported practice in the provision of care in the birthing environment. Students will be expected to submit written reflection of their clinical placement. These reflections are to be critical and function as a learning tool as a means of analysing practice as a midwife.
02. Plan and communicate midwifery care with the woman, her family, and a mentoring midwife.
- Activities:
- Students will be on clinical placement for 4 weeks (160 hours) within a maternity care setting where labour and birth care is provided, following the completion of the teaching period of the subject. Students will work alongside mentoring midwives providing labour and birth care to women. It is expected students will work toward completing clinical requirements, such as caring for a woman in labour, witnessing births and conducting a birth. They will consolidate their learning and work toward supported practice in the provision of care in the birthing environment.
03. Provide safe and effective assessment and care to the woman during labour and birth within the scope of practice of a midwife.
- Activities:
- Face to face lectures. Small group work/ tutorial based activities Laboratory based simulations of essential skills required in the labour and birth setting, such as vaginal examinations and the management of birth Students will be on clinical placement for 4 weeks (160 hours) within a maternity care setting where labour and birth care is provided, following the completion of the teaching period of the subject. 04. Recognise and describe deviations from the normal labour and birth process.
- Activities:
- Face to face lectures. Laboratory based simulations of essential skills required in the labour and birth setting, such as vaginal examinations and the management of birth Enquiry based learning activities using scenarios that incorporate a range of media, paper based documents, contemporary guidelines and role play. E- learning modules with interactive web based activities.
05. Use reflective and evidenced based practice to inform their midwifery care.
- Activities:
- E-learning modules with interactive activities exploring content such as care of the woman labouring in water and the ethical responsibilities of the midwife . Through enquiry based learning students will explore evidenced based guidelines that underpin labour and birth care. Assessment activities will address the use of these guidelines in practice.
