Subject outline

In this subject you will apply the principles of exercise testing and prescription to develop and deliver client-centered exercise interventions. You will practice and further enhance skills in exercise service delivery to apparently healthy clientele. In addition, you will explore exercise guidelines for healthy populations with special considerations including pregnancy, children and adolescents, older adults, lower back pain, overweight and mental illness.

01. Apply published pre-exercise screening tools to risk stratify participants, identifying absolute and relative contraindications to fitness testing and participation in exercise.

Activities:
Blended content: Case studies to apply and interpret screening tools to appraise risk, identification of absolute and relative contraindications for metabolic, respiratory, cardiovascular and musculoskeletal disease, recognise requirement to refer participants; Practicum: Pre-participation screening and risk assessment for a variety of clients.

02. Select, perform and interpret appropriate fitness and health assessments for apparently healthy individuals and participants with special considerations.

Activities:
Practicals: Ability to undertake and interpret standard and modified health and fitness assessments to include anthropometry, body composition, fitness, blood pressure and flexibility to asymptomatic and apparently healthy participants with special conditions that includes, children, older adults, pregnant women, overweight, diabetes, hypertension, arthritis and asthma; Practicum: Health screening, anthropometry, body composition, fitness assessments for a range of participants.

03. Critically assess the needs of participants across the lifespan and prescribe appropriate client-centred exercise programs.

Activities:
Blended content: Evidence based exercise programmes for apparently healthy participants and participants with special conditions to include, children, older adults, pregnant women, overweight, diabetes, hypertension, arthritis and asthma; Practicum: Prescription of client-centred exercise programmes for individuals and groups to include appropriate endurance, resistance and flexibility training programmes.
