Subject outline

This subject introduces the structure and function of the basic classes of biological molecules, rate equations of catalysis, enzyme kinetics and allosteric control. Students will study the pathways by which various biological molecules are degraded within the cell to release energy, or synthesised from smaller molecules. Emphasis is on the integration and regulation of the pathways. The practical course will consolidate basic biochemical techniques and formal report writing.

Graduate capabilities & intended learning outcomes

01. Given a particular biological molecule, identify the chemical structure important to biological function.

Activities:
Taught in lectures, tutorials and practical classes. Assessrd in written practical reports and examinations.

02. Illustrate how enzymes are able to facilitate metabolic reactions, and how they are regulated.

Activities:
Taught in lectures and practical classes. Assessed in written practical reports and examinations.

03. Compare the various pathways for metabolising carbohydrates, lipids and amino acids, their location, function and regulation.

Activities:
Taught in lectures and practical classes. Assessed in written practical reports and examinations.

04. Demonstrate critical analysis of data by presenting experimental data in the form of a written report, indicating uncertainties and limitations in the design and conduct of laboratory experiments.
