Subject outline
In this subject students are introduced to the functional biology of organs and organ systems, focusing on human and mammalian systems. Themes include the integration and coordination of function, maintenance of homeostasis and cell ultrastructure as seen in histological sections. There is a practical element in this subject to acquaint students with a variety of scientific techniques.

01. Describe the ultrastructural and microscopic structure of cells and tissues that form the major organ systems and their relationship to physiological function
- Activities:
- Students will undertake activities in online and in class settings to examine the structural characteristic of the ultrastructural and microscopic cellular components. This will be complemented with content related to the physiological functioning of the relevant organ systems
02. Describe the structure and function of the major organ systems.
- Activities:
- Workshop and practical activities will be conducted to apply the concepts studied in relation to the major organs system of the body
03. Describe how the body maintains homeostasis and use examples to demonstrate how it is achieved
- Activities:
- Homeostatic applications will be demonstrated in practical activities and workshop classes to provide students with the opportunity to apply relevant concepts
04. Complete scientific experiments that examine aspects of human physiology; interpreting data, recognizing methodological issues, identifying the theoretical basis for the experiment, and communicating observations and results
- Activities:
- Undertaking a variety of practical classes will provide students with an opportunity to develop skills in scientific laboratories where hands on experience will complement the theoretical content from the lectures
