Subject outline
This subject develops student theoretical knowledge and skills of the methods and relevant project management skills required to plan and undertake an applied research project in the primary industries. Students will develop an understanding of applied research practices and processes including searching for, analysing and synthesising relevant academic literature; selected research methodologies and common approaches to applied research in the primary industries; research design and methods of data collection; ethical considerations; relevant skills of project management. This subject is the first part of a research project that will be continued in Applied Research Project 2. Students will be provided with applied research supervision by teaching staff or appropriate industry professional.

Graduate capabilities & intended learning outcomes
01. Search and evaluate current literature through critique and the synthesis of ideas to develop hypotheses which can be tested.
- Activities:
- Students will search literature and write a literature review. This will be presented to their peers and staff.
02. Develop a research project proposal by applying planning techniques and evidence-based knowledge
- Activities:
- Students will also be guided through how to approach and liaise with external collaborators.
03. Create, maintain and document a project management plan
- Activities:
- Tutorials will explore management skills and techniques. Students will consult with relevant staff, students and industry people to source requisites, and for collaboration on the project. Students will present their research proposal to their peers and staff.
