Subject outline

In this subject students are provided with experiential learning opportunities to further integrate theory with practice, to demonstrate appropriate professional relationships, and gain working knowledge of organisational contexts. Through this professionally supervised practice experience students will be provided with constructive feedback on their performance and will be challenged to critically self-reflect on their effectiveness. Students will have opportunities to further develop skills in basic interviewing, assessment and intervention processes required for practice along with skills in research. Professional competencies will be developed across seven key learning areas and will be assessed against the standard of competency at a beginning level with support.

Graduate capabilities & intended learning outcomes

01. Competently perform a range of social work tasks at a beginning level by applying social work knowledge and skills in an integrated manner.

Activities:
Students will with support from the Field Educator, undertake social work assessment, intervention, referral and evaluation tasks; identify the professional roles of team members and utilise clear and effective inter-personal communication skills

02. Critically evaluate personal social work practice strengths and identify future learning needs/goals for final-year placement.

Activities:
Students will, through effective use of supervision, be assisted to recognise and understand their own assumptions and values and how these may impact on practice. Through feedback they will learn to critically reflect on their use and application of social work theory within practice.

03. Evaluate the impact of organisational factors upon their practice.

Activities:
Students will, after practice and reflection, be able to describe some legislative and social policy frameworks relevant to, and influential within, the placement field of practice. They will also reflect on how they have formed effective working relationships with clients/ user groups, colleagues, professionals and people in other significant roles / positions

04. Identify a range of professional skills and how these apply to the AASW Practice Standards.

Activities:
Students will, after practice and reflection, describe which professional values and ethics informed their professional practice in accordance with the AASW Code of Ethics and identify professional behaviours that have enhanced their social work practice
