This subject is an introduction to the fundamental knowledge and skills required for person-centred nursing practice. Through lectures, online activities, workshops, clinical skills laboratories and a clinical placement you will develop understanding of the principles of nursing health assessments and the clinical reasoning cycle across the lifespan. This will enable you to plan and provide basic nursing care for any person, in any context and location. The clinical practicum will allow you to integrate theoretical principles to basic nursing practice. To achieve the learning outcomes of this subject you will be expected to complete a range of written, verbal and clinical assessments within a 12-week period.

Prerequisites Students must be enrolled in one of the following courses: HBN, HBNM, HBNUP, HBNPRW, RBN - Bachelor of Nursing, HZNM, HZNMD, HZNMDB - Bachelor of Nursing/Bachelor of Midwifery. All other regional students in the Health Sciences undergraduate courses are permitted to enrol with school approval.

- Activities:
- Describe the clinical reasoning process and cycle. Discuss the importance of using evidence when planning nursing care. Identify the common sources from which best nursing practice evidence can be obtained.

02. Develop a range of strategies to facilitate effective communication with people and health professionals.
- Activities:
- Demonstrate effective comminication with peope including those with cognitive and sensory limitations and/or non-English speaking. Recognise legal and professional requirements that govern healthcare communication including; appreciate the need to maintain confidentiality in verbal and written communications, documentation and storage of healthcare records, apply communication principles to relevant professional contexts.

03. Use a health assessment framework and techniques to conduct a nursing health history and document the findings.
- Activities:
- Identify relevant information in a nursing health history. Develop a range of assessment techniques aimed at completing a nursing health history. Describe a range of normal assessment findings across the lifespan.

04. Discuss the importance of patient safety strategies and demonstrate the provision of safe patient care.
- Activities:
- Identify hazards that compromise patient safety. Describe methods used to protect patients including; falls prevention strategies, infection control cycle, pressure injury prevention, manual handling principles and situational awareness. Participate in the provision of safe patient care.

05. Outlline the professional roles and responsibilities of the nurse and midwife.
- Activities:
