Subject outline

In this subject students will consolidate all prior learning and have the opportunity to extend their knowledge and skill through application of further psychosocial complexities impacting on maternity care . In collaboration with the multidisciplinary team and in partnership with the woman, the student will build on previous experiences to develop more autonomous skills and knowledge in the provision of safe and effective care required for women with psychosocial. Students will be encouraged to manage care for women, think critically, respond effectively to situations involving these women and learn when to consult and refer appropriately

01. Provide safe and effective midwifery care to the woman and her family with minimal supervision in readiness to practice as a novice midwife on completion of the subject/course.

Activities:
Small group work / tutorial based activities using paper based scenarios, media articles, scientific journals. E-learning modules with web based activities. Students will be on a clinical placement for 6 weeks (240 hours) within a maternity care setting. During this time it is expected that they will work toward completing their clinical requirements, consolidate learning and work toward independent practice. Students will have the opportunity to extend their clinical practice with the application of theory and knowledge developed during the semester. Students will be expected to submit a written reflection of their placement. These reflections are to be critical and function as a learning tool as a means of analysing practice as a midwife.

02. Evaluate the relationship between psychosocial and physical complexities of pregnancy and their impact on maternity care.

03. Critically appraise evidence and plan and implement maternity care according to evidence based practice.

Activities:
Clinical Project - 5000 wds (major assessment for unit) based on a relevant clinical issue of interest for the student. The project will involve a literature review, development of methology, implementation of audit, presentation of results, conclusion and discussion.
