Subject outline

Students build on the foundation knowledge and skills pregnancy, birth & postnatal care with women with common childbearing complexities. Students extend knowledge of human anatomy, physiology, normal pregnancy, labour & birth & peurperium by examining the physiological cause & consequences of most common childbearing complexities including diabetes, medical co-morbidities, blood group incompatibilities and post term pregnancy. Basic fetal development is explored, and the factors that can interrupt fetal development. Using contemporary evidence-based guidelines, students will develop the skills & knowledge to provide safe and effective care to women experiencing common complexities. Studies incorporate safe competent care of the childbearing journey & the benefits of continuity of care for women experiencing complexities. The scope of practice of the midwife is covered. Clinical skills used in the provision of care to women experiencing common complexities will be consolidated.

01. Provide (under supervision) comprehensive, safe and effective midwifery care to the woman according to the scope of practice of the midwife while undertaking 120 hour clinical placement.

Activities:
Small group work / tutorial based activities using paper based scenarios, media articles, scientific journals. E-learning modules with web based activities. Students will be on a clinical placement for 3 weeks (120 hours) within a maternity care setting. During this time it is expected that they will work toward completing their clinical requirements, consolidate learning and work toward independent practice. Students will have the opportunity to extend their clinical practice with the application of theory and knowledge developed during the semester. Students will be expected to submit a written reflection of their placement. These reflections are to be critical and function as a learning tool as a means of analysing practice as a midwife.

02. Describe the physiology of common complexities in pregnancy and their impact on maternal and fetal health and wellbeing throughout the spectrum of maternity care

03. Recognise the specific role that the midwife should play in the multidisclipinary team in providing continuity of care for women with complexities of childbearing

04. Analyse the evidence used in current contemporary guidelines for the management of common complexities in childbearing

Activities:
