Subject outline

This subject covers the fundamentals of digital design and design with digital controllers.Topics covered include: digital logic, flip-flops, binary arithmetic,microcontrollers, serial communication and memory storage elements. The course includes problem classes and laboratories which allow the students to develop and debug digital circuits, and microcontroller systems which are programmed in Embedded C.

02. Analyse digital logic circuits using truth tables and waveform timing diagrams to determine the output of the digital system.

03. Perform binary arithmetic and conversions between different number bases.

Activities:
Number bases are demonstrated in lectures and tutorials. Students perform practical problem solving in assignments and laboratory sessions.

Throughout laboratories, assignments and tutorials students are required to design circuits which interface microcontrollers with other common components.

05. Develop firmware to solve engineering problems using Embedded C whilst using an industry standard IDE for code debugging.

For 6 laboratory classes and throughout assignments and tutorials students are required to develop code to solve specific problems.
