The following list provides information specifically for domestic graduation ceremonies. If your question is not answered below, please get in touch with us via ASK a Question.
● Smoking is not permitted in or around the venue. Please enquire where designated smoking areas are on the day.
● Food and beverages other than water are not permitted inside the theatre. Refreshments will be served after the ceremony for all to enjoy.
● Children are encouraged to attend but they must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times.
● Prams are not permitted in the theatre. A designated pram parking spot will be available outside the theatre.
● Please refrain from loud conversations during the ceremony and ensure mobile phones are switched to silent.
● Please remain seated during the ceremony unless you are leaving the theatre. Photography may be taken throughout the ceremony from a seated position. Videography is not permitted in the venue.
● First aid services will be available if required. Please ask a staff member to be directed to first aid/medic services.
When is Graduation?
La Trobe graduations take place annually at the Victorian regional campuses as well as Sydney, and three times a year at the Melbourne (Bundoora) campus in May, September and December.
The university also holds graduations internationally in conjunction with learning partners abroad.
Do guests need tickets to attend Graduation?
Tickets are required for entry to the theatre where the ceremony takes place.
Guests without a ticket can watch the ceremony broadcast from outside the theatre. They’re welcome to attend the other activities on the day, including joining their graduate for photos and enjoying refreshments after the ceremony.
Please check with your graduand that they have claimed their complimentary guest tickets while registering to graduate. Guest seats aren’t numbered or reserved, it’s first-in-best-dressed, so ensure you arrive early.
Extra guest tickets:
For some ceremonies, additional tickets won’t be available. For others, we will notify graduands approximately 2 weeks before the ceremony via email if additional guest tickets are available and how to obtain them.
What should I wear to graduation?
Graduations are a ceremonial event; graduands are asked to dress as though they are attending a job interview. Academic staff will be dressed in their academic regalia.
What time should guests arrive for Graduation?
Graduands are encouraged to arrive two hours before the ceremony to allow enough time for parking, check-in and to dress in their regalia. You might also like to arrive with them at this time – or not long after - to support them on their day, enjoy your time before the ceremony and take pre-ceremony family photos around the venue grounds.
Please note, doors to the theatre will open 45 minutes before the ceremony. Please have your ticket (either hard-copy or digital) ready to scan upon entry. Seating is first-come, first-served.
I have a family member who requires special assistance. What information should I provide when planning their visit?

How long does the ceremony go for?
Ceremonies are usually 90 minutes in duration.
Is there a cloakroom and concierge to store bulky items?
Cloakroom facilities are not available at ceremonies. Please store bulky items (flowers, large gifts, framed photos) under your seats. Graduands are encouraged to give bulky items to their guests during the ceremony.
What happens after the ceremony?
After the ceremony Graduates and their guests are invited to enjoy refreshments at the reception. If your graduate has pre-purchased professional photos, you might like to join them at this time. You’re also welcome to scout the area to take further family photographs with your graduate for your personal records.
Will the ceremony be available to watch online?
Yes, the graduation ceremony will be broadcasted via the Livestream link on the University website. Please note videography is not permitted in the venue.
I'm attending graduation with my baby/toddler. Will there be family facilities available?
Family facilities will be available for caregivers. Please ask a staff member on the day for directions.
Are umbrellas and prams permitted at Graduation?
Guests are welcome to bring umbrellas and prams with them to graduation, however, due to confined space accessibility, they will not be permitted inside the theatre. Designated pram parking and umbrella storage will be available on the day. Please ask a staff member for directions.
Transportation and parking
Ample parking is available at each venue within short walking distance. Parking restrictions and fees can apply so please follow the signs. You can find more detailed parking instruction on the graduation location page.

All car parking spaces on the Melbourne (Bundoora) Campus require a valid car parking permit Monday to Friday, 8am-5pm.

Does the university provide letters for visa applications if guests are travelling from abroad?
To obtain travel visas, guests may need to provide a letter to confirm that they are attending a graduation ceremony in Australia. For more information and to place an order, see course completion letters.
How do I graduate?
If you're eligible to graduate, we will email a graduation invitation where you'll register to graduate, to your student email address about 5-8 weeks before your round of ceremonies.
Can't see a graduation email in your inbox? Check your 'clutter' and deleted items folders.
Follow the instructions your invitation email to register to either attend a ceremony, graduate 'in absentia' or defer your graduation to a later ceremony.
Please note, you are eligible to graduate if you:
- Have met credit requirements for your course
- Have a course status of 'passed'
- Don't owe any money to the University

What is the process for ordering guest tickets?
Graduands are offered two guest tickets which you can claim during the online registration and payment process. Make sure you claim your tickets when you register, otherwise they may be made available to other guests.
After all graduands have registered, we will notify you via student email if there are any unallocated guest tickets available. Unallocated tickets will only be available on a first-come-first-served basis.
Note: December graduations are expected to be fully booked. Unallocated tickets won't be available for December ceremonies.
Extra guests without tickets
You can bring additional guests to graduation (i.e. more than two), however, only guests with tickets may sit in the auditorium during the ceremony. Additional guests can attend the other activities of the day, including joining you for photos, enjoying the light refreshments, and watching the live ceremony video in the cafeteria or outside the venue.
How do I get a visa for international guests?
To get travel visas, your guests may need a letter to confirm that they are attending your graduation ceremony. See course completion letters.

Will professional photography be available?
During the registration process, you can pre-purchase add-on photography packages that will be available to you on the day.
