Yanti Turang is a young Australian who has demonstrated the global impact that can be made with a nursing degree and a determination to make a difference. She lives in New Orleans, where she works as a paediatric nurse, is lead singer of an indie rock band, Mahayla, and is a survivor of Hurricane Katrina. Yanti has seen first-hand the effects of poor healthcare in New Orleans, as well as Indonesia. With an Indonesian father, Yanti was well aware that her Indonesian relatives were dying from preventable diseases. In 2011 this inspired Yanti to establish LearnToLive – a humanitarian organisation providing health care and education to communities in Indonesia. She gathered a team of doctors, nurses, dietitians, film makers, architects, and water specialists to help realise her vision of developing healthy and sustainable communities.

Today LearnToLive improves the health and wellbeing of over 1500 people in North Sulawesi, Indonesia, with a new program commencing in Laos and soon South Africa. In 2012 Yanti was recognised as one of Louisiana's 100 Greatest Nurses. Yanti has also initiated a partnership program with La Trobe University providing nursing students with the opportunity to participate in LearnToLive as an elective.
