Mr Vallabha Hampiholi

Harman International

Course of study:
Master of Electronic Systems and Network Engineering 2005

Has your degree at La Trobe prepared you well for the workplace?

The time I spent at the university has helped a great deal. The subjects that I studied have helped a lot in terms of skills required by the industry to approach a given problem and how to design and implement a solution for it. The professors that I interacted with were obviously experts in their respective fields and they gave me a new perspective on problems. This has helped me find workable and cost-effective solutions to challenges I have faced in the industry.

Tell us a little about your work history

After I came back to India from Australia I worked with a software services company - Larsen & Toubro Infotech. There I worked with Qualcomm Inc as part of a team developing camera modules.

From 2007-2011 I was project team leader at MindTree where I developed Audio/Video and Imaging algorithms and received an award for implementing their first IP (H.264 Video Decoder) on various platforms.

Currently I am employed by Harman International, which works with major car manufacturers in Europe, America and Asia. I am a project manager working in the field of multimedia system design, implementation and integration. The technology has evolved a great deal since I have graduated but the knowledge and problem solving skills provided by the La Trobe Engineering degree have enabled me to confidently tackle any challenge.

I have filed four patents with the United States Patent and Trademark Office, with several others approved for filing in the future.

What are things you enjoy most about your job?

I enjoy design challenges, innovation, transferring knowledge to new team members and coming up with cost-effective and robust solutions.

Besides your career, where has life taken you since graduation?

I have a healthy family life, got married to my childhood sweetheart and have an extremely naughty 5 year old son who has started going to school. In my spare time I love to volunteer and have contributed to several UNICEF programs.

What advice can you offer to current students?

I highly advise students not to lose track of the importance of fundamental skills such as mathematics and physics. Talk to the supervisors as often as possible and as much as possible to get their precious perspectives on problems at hand. The staff in the Engineering Department at La Trobe have a wealth of experience in research, industry and teaching across a myriad of fields. Listen, question and learn!
