Has your degree at La Trobe prepared you well for the workplace?

An engineering degree at La Trobe University provides the opportunity to specialise in various fields of electronics including Biomedical Engineering. I have found both the individual and group projects within the engineering course to be beneficial in developing and enhancing my problem solving, communication and team work skills.

Tell us a little about your work history

After I graduated I stayed on at La Trobe University as a Sessional Lecturer for the Faculty of Health Sciences and also as an Associate Lecturer for the Department of Electronic Engineering where I conducted lab demonstrations and tutored first-year electronic classes.

Two years later I started my career in the Biomedical Engineering field with Philips Medical Systems as a Customer Support Engineer for Cardiac and Monitoring Systems. In this role I had responsibility for the installation and servicing of Philips monitoring equipment located at various hospitals in Victoria.

I then furthered my career in the Biomedical Engineering field with Draeger Medical where I have been working for the past five years. My initial position with Draeger was as a Workshop Engineer and shortly after I was promoted to Field Service Engineer, which involves installation, repair and maintenance of all anaesthesia, ventilation and perinatal equipment within the Draeger portfolio. Less than a year later I was promoted to Service Team Leader of the Southern District which involves coordinating and supervising the Field Service Team in Victoria/Tasmania, South Australia and Western Australia. My new position has given me the opportunity to travel within Victoria and interstate on a number of occasions.

I enjoy working in different environments and gaining first-hand experience in seeing the devices assist patients.
