Tony Ellwood is currently the Director of the National Gallery of Victoria. He accepted the position in February 2012.

Previous to his appointment at the NGV he served four years at the Queensland Art Gallery where he dramatically increased visitor numbers to the QAG and its sister site, the Gallery of Modern Art, making Brisbane an arts town to be reckoned with.

Ellwood also held the position of Deputy Director of the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) (2000–07), with a focus on international art, education and public programs. He served as Director of the Bendigo Art Gallery from 1996 to 1999, and in the early 1990s was Director of Waringarri Aboriginal Arts cooperative in Western Australia.

Key recent projects for the National Gallery of Victoria included management of the Melbourne Winter Masterpieces series of international exhibitions, and the $168 million redevelopment of the NGV International building.

He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from La Trobe University and a Masters Degree and Graduate Diploma in Museum Studies from Deakin University in Melbourne.
