Frequently Asked Questions
I have never been to the La Trobe Sports Centre pool, what is it like?
Our swimming pool is a 25m indoor heated pool. It is 0.9m at each end and gradually slopes deeper to 2.0m through the middle. We also have a deep water pit that is 2.5m deep.
We have a Tarzan Rope that swings into the deep water pit, which is incorporated into our Active Kidz Birthday Party activities ... a real highlight of the party!
Do you have a toddler's pool?
At La Trobe Sports Centre, we only have the one 25m pool (with the deep water pit off the side).
How long does a birthday party go for?
The duration of our Active Kidz Birthday Party is 2 ½ hours. This is typically set out as one hour of land-based activities followed by half an hour for lunch and then an hour of aquatic based activities.
We also offer the option of two land-based activities, although time slots for this choice are restricted.
What activities are offered during the birthday party?
There are a wide range of activities from which your child can choose from. Our land-based activities include a vast array of sports such as:
- Rock Climbing
- Table Tennis
- And much more!
Please note that the rock-climbing option will take the full hour to complete. The other sports can be split into half hour blocks for variety. Please keep in mind that outdoor activities are weather dependant. If we encounter wet weather, we will make arrangements to run an alternate activity. Sports are also subject to facility availability. We recommend calling the Sports Centre so our friendly customer service team can assist you.
Our aquatic based activities after lunch include kayaking, kayak relays, and our all-time favourite, the tarzan rope swing
What age do your birthday parties suit?
The best ages for our parties are children aged 7 – 15 years. We do find that children under 7 may have difficulties with the depth of our pool if they aren't confident in the water. Feel free to give La Trobe Sport a call on 03 9479 2973 to discuss further.
What if some of the children are weaker swimmers?
We have a number of blue buoyancy belts that we can provide for children who may not be as strong in the water. The belts are designed for deep water running so are less restrictive than a lifejacket but still provide a high level of buoyancy for more fun! Belts are issued at the discretion of La Trobe Sport Staff with safety at the forefront of all belts distributed.
How many children can I invite?
We require a minimum of 12 children. Our catering space does get a little squishy at 30 children though, however we are happy to discuss alternate options to ensure that your child has a special birthday.
What about younger children, can they join in the birthday party?
We are happy for younger siblings to join in on the activities, however, we ask that children under 5 are accompanied by a guardian. This rule is also applicable to the aquatic section of the party, where a guardian of the child who is under 5 must always remain in the water and within arm’s-reach
What sort of supervision will there be during the party?
The number and age of the children at the party will determine how many activity staff will be present. A party with 12 children will have one activity leader present the whole time plus a lifeguard observing the pool activities. A party of 20 children would have 2 activity staff present for all the activities plus a lifeguard observing the pool activities.
For larger groups younger than 7 wishing to participate in aquatic based activities, please ensure this is clearly communicated during the time of the booking to allow for additional staff.
What decorations are provided for children's birthday parties?
The half an hour for lunch is held in our pool lounge which overlooks the swimming pool. The party room is separate from the general public. Our staff decorate the room with bright and colourful Happy Birthday signs, cups and plates, and bunting. You are welcome to bring any themed centrepieces etc. If you are bringing your own decorations, please let us know ahead of time and ensure they are quick to assemble as we run up 5 parties a day!
What do I have to bring to the party?
The La Trobe Sports Centre will cater party food for lunch, you only need to bring the cake! We have a large fridge and freezer if you want to have an ice-cream cake. Don’t forget that your child will probably receive lots of presents, so keep in mind how you will get them home with you. You can bring your camera but please refer to your party pack for La Trobe Sport’s Photography Policy around the Centre.
What food is provided for the party?
We supply delicious party pies, sausage rolls, chicken nuggets, potato chips, mixed lollies and drinks!
We also understand that the parents get thirsty so there are tea and coffee facilities available for them.
Although we provide plenty of food for the party attendees, we are happy for parents to bring specific food for their child’s party or for themselves.
We pride ourselves in our flexibility and can cater for special dietary needs. Above all we clean everything away for you while you relax and enjoy the party.
Does the food include lolly bags?
We provide bowls of mixed lollies on the table during lunch. You are welcome to bring lolly bags if you would like.
What role do the parents have to play during the party?
We do not require that parents get into the water. We do ask that parents assist in the changerooms (if necessary). If you've chosen Rock Climbing, we ask that you bring at least two active parents to assist with belaying, that way the kids get more time on the wall. Parents are welcome to participate if they wish, otherwise you can sit back and relax while our activity staff take care of the rest!
How much does it cost?
It is $30 per child which includes 2½ hours of activities and a qualified instructor. We pride ourselves in having a flexible and fun environment in which to make your child's birthday party a memorable experience.
