Background

Molecular Virology and Structural Biology is a key driver to understand virus evolution and viral protein/DNA interacting interfaces, which are critical in viral infection and assembly processes. This information is vital for the conservation of animal health essential for a sustainable ecosystem.

PhD projects, linked to an ARC-funded project, are available to:

  • characterise binding interfaces involved in circovirus protein complexes to facilitate the development of anti-viral options against deadly viral infections in native endangered avian species
  • uncover molecular evolution of viruses through study of a novel virus recently sequenced from an endangered avian species followed by structural characterisation of critical viral proteins.

Are you eligible to apply?

To be eligible to apply for this scholarship, applicants must:

- have a graded Masters by research degree in a relevant discipline completed within the last ten years assessed at a La Trobe Masters by research standard of 70 or above; OR

• have a graded Bachelors (Honours) degree, Masters by coursework or ungraded Masters by research degree completed within the last ten years where you achieved a weighted average mark of 70 or above across any coursework subjects; and

  • your degree includes a research thesis of 15,000-20,000 words*; or
  • your degree includes a written research component comprising at least 3/8 of one year*; or
  • you are the lead author of a peer-reviewed publication or other research published within the last ten years*

You must also be capable of working between groups and with outside stakeholder groups.

How to apply

  1. review details on how to apply for candidature
  2. contact Dr Subir Sarker with a CV of no more than three pages and a two-page statement on academic background and research interests.
  3. when you have received in-principle agreement for supervision, complete and submit your application by 24 January 2020, for admission into La Trobe’s PhD program, indicating you wish to be considered for a Molecular Virology/Structural Biology Scholarship.
The University will carefully review your application and consider you for a Molecular Virology/Structural Biology Scholarship. You will be advised of an outcome in February 2020 if you are unsuccessful for a Molecular Virology/Structural Biology Scholarship.
