This action-packed workshop gives students hands on experiences to experiment with voice acting, sound effects and recording techniques. Using La Trobe University's professional recording facilities, zoom recorders and editing suites, students design their own soundscape for a short animation by creating, recording and editing sounds to communicate story, setting, character and genre.

The Art of Creating Visual Text

Curriculum: Year 9 and 10 English

Dates and Location: July and November in Melbourne (Bundoora).

Duration: 4 hours

Cost: $20 per student or free to schools with ICSEA < 1000 + bus costs reimbursement

Texts provide the means for communication whether they are written, spoken, visual or in digital forms.

In this workshop, students:

  • Explore how visual images and soundtracks can alter the meaning of visual texts in a variety of genre.
  • Experiment with ways that sound can support and modify visual texts.
  • Compare film representations of individuals and groups in different historical, social and cultural contexts.
  • Use La Trobe University’s recording facilities to adapt and update a variety of visual texts for different audiences and purposes.
