La Trobe receives Olympic recognition

A La Trobe University research centre is one of only 11 worldwide to be selected by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to conduct research into the prevention and treatment of sports injuries and illnesses.

The La Trobe University Sport and Exercise Medicine Research Centre (LASEM), and the Australian Centre for Research into Injury in Sport and its Prevention (ACRISP) at Edith Cowan University, have been chosen by the IOC to become the only Australian members of the International Olympic Committee Medical Research Network.

Professor of Musculoskeletal Health at LASEM, Jill Cook, said this four-year partnership is an exciting opportunity for the dedicated team of researchers and students at LASEM.

“This prestigious acknowledgment will help facilitate and further our state-of-the-art research at LASEM,” Professor Cook said.

“Our collaboration with the IOC recognises how important it is to support research that reduces the risk of injury in all forms of sport, exercise, fitness and physical activity. It’s also a testament to and endorsement of the achievements our centre has already made in the world of sports medicine

“Injury prevention is very complex and multifactorial. We’re proud to be one of the 11 centres working to establish long-term research programmes that will improve athlete health outcomes.”

Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research), Professor Russell Hoye, congratulated LASEM for asserting their status as a world leader in sports research.

“The IOC selection process is an incredibly competitive one,” Professor Hoye said.

“I’m delighted LASEM has been recognised in this elite group and look forward to seeing the positive outcomes this partnership will create for the sports industry and the lives of athletes.”
