Professor Richard Larkins AO has been named as the seventh Chancellor of La Trobe University.
University Council this week unanimously voted to appoint the respected medical researcher, physician and University leader beginning 26 February 2017.
He will succeed current Chancellor, Professor Adrienne E Clarke AC, who has been in the role since 2011.
Professor Clarke said Council was very pleased to attract a scholar of such national and international standing and experience to the role.
“Professor Larkins' combination of skills and experience in scientific research and medicine alongside his extensive experience in academic management gives him a deep understanding of the practical issues that confront a university and its staff,” Professor Clarke said.
“He also has wide experience in governance. He has served on the La Trobe Council and its key governance committees since 2014. Altogether, Council concluded after an extensive search that there is no one better able to fill the role of Chancellor than Professor Larkins.
“I feel honoured to be in a position to hand over, after my six years as Chancellor, to a person so eminent and so committed to the values and to the future of La Trobe University."
Professor Larkins was Vice-Chancellor of Monash University between 2003 and 2009. He had earlier served as Dean of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences at the University of Melbourne.
During his career, he’s also served as Chair of the National Health and Medical Research Council of Australia, President of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians, Chair of Universities Australia and as a member of the Prime Minister’s Science, Engineering and Innovation Council.
Professor Larkins said he was delighted and honoured to be named as Chancellor.
“I am totally committed to La Trobe’s core values – a focus on excellence and opportunity, an approach that puts students at the centre of University thinking and an emphasis on research that has relevance and impact.
I’m arriving at La Trobe at an exciting time; the University is on an upwards trajectory and is poised to mark the first 50 years of service to the Australian and International community. I look forward to being part of a very successful future for La Trobe.”
Vice-Chancellor, Professor John Dewar said he looked forward to working with the new Chancellor.
“Richard Larkins brings great insight and wisdom to La Trobe. He has spent most of his working life in Melbourne and within the research, medical and university sectors, and has a wealth of experience and knowledge that will assist the University to take the next step from being a great university, to one of Victoria’s top three educational institutions,” Professor Dewar said.
“I also want to acknowledge the huge contribution of Professor Clarke to La Trobe. Under her stewardship, La Trobe University has built a strong foundation for success, that will continue to pay dividends for many years to come.”
