Regional policy recognition welcome

La Trobe Vice-Chancellor Professor John Dewar has welcomed the National’s federal election commitments aimed at lifting the access of regional Australians to university education.

“La Trobe welcomes increasing policy emphasis given to regional education issues. As Victoria’s largest provider of higher education in regional communities, we have been advocating for a better deal for regional students for some time,” Professor Dewar said.

“I am very pleased that the Nationals have committed to giving this much-needed area of policy reform the priority that is needed.

“We support the proposed changes to AUSTUDY eligibility criteria and isolated children’s allowance, which recognise the additional costs of study faced by regional students.

“The New Rural and Regional Enterprise scholarships are also a welcome initiative and we encourage careful consideration of their design, so that the benefits flow to students from the regions who will work in the regions.

“La Trobe University has been leading the policy debate and the thinking in this area and I look forward to working with whomever forms government to achieve better outcomes for regional and remote students. We look forward to taking part in the National’s independent comprehensive review should the coalition be returned to power.

“La Trobe remains steadfast in its belief that an inland medical school should be a key regional education policy priority,” Professor Dewar said.
