La Trobe to lead China-focused research

A new research centre dedicated to research on China has been officially opened at La Trobe University’s Melbourne Campus.

The China Studies Research Centre has been established to support, strengthen and lead innovative research on China.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor John Dewar was joined by dignitaries include Consul General of P. R. China in Melbourne Hon Mr Jian ZHAO, Pro Vice-Chancellor Professor Anthony McGrew and Professor John Fitzgerald, President of the Australian Academy of Humanities on Thursday afternoon to celebrate the official opening.

The Director of the Centre, Professor John Makeham said the centre will support the University’s aspiration to became a leader in China-related research.

“The new China Studies Research Centre aims to promote and advance La Trobe University’s research strengths in China studies.”

“Our vision is for La Trobe University to be recognised as a vibrant centre of research excellence in China Studies.

“La Trobe will be working closely with partners and institutions in Greater China to foster research links and enhance its reputation in China-related research,” Professor Makeham said.

The new Centre has already established several flagship programs including:

China Studies Seminar Series

China Studies Seed-funding Research program

China Studies Research Centre doctoral degree scholarship program

“The China Studies Research Centre provides a dedicated platform to pursue collaborative research opportunities both nationally and internationally.”
