New medical training centre for students

Our first cohort of health students is a week into their exciting 'hands on' learning experience at the brand new Northern Centre for Health Education and Research facility.

The building, next to the Northern Hospital in Epping is fitted with state of the art facilities which mirror the conditions of real life medical settings, such as a hospital or physiotherapy clinic.

Modern lecture rooms and break out spaces feature as well.

The initiative - seven years in the making - is a partnership between La Trobe, Northern Health, the University of Melbourne and State and Federal governments.

It will enable more than 400 additional health professionals to be trained annually. Research that will be undertaken at the Centre, aims to bring lasting benefits to the northern Melbourne community, as medical conditions directly affecting the local population will be investigated and addressed by NCHER researchers.

An Open Day has allowed interested staff and stakeholders to take a first hand look at where our next generation of health practitioners are learning their skills.

Final year Speech Pathology students have moved in, with Occupational Therapy and Social Work students arriving in the next few weeks and other disciplines to follow.
