New La Trobe and Kyushu Uni partnership

La Trobe and Kyushu partnership puts Maths for Industry on the map

In an historic international collaboration, the La Trobe University Branch of the Kyushu University Institute of Mathematics for Industry has been launched by the Minister for Small Business, Innovation and Trade Adem Somyurek.

Funded under the Japanese government's Joint Use Institute program, the IMI trains the world's best mathematical minds and adapts their technical skills to provide a competitive edge for industry.

La Trobe Professor Phil Broadbridge said  IMI, including its Australian Branch  at the University's Bundoora campus, will become a central hub for mathematical industry and development in the Asia-Pacific

'This is a big deal for not only La Trobe, but our country's industry and profile in this emerging space,' Professor Broadbridge said.

'IMI members are using advanced maths for industry in many ways. From creating automated combinations of facial images for movies – to cryptography systems for computer security and optimising surface shapes in engineering design.

'This is putting cutting edge research into practice and it's happening right here at La Trobe.'

Professor Keith Nugent said one of La Trobe's priorities is for the University to become much more industry-facing.

'Our aim is to open ourselves up to the community and ensure that we engage with it. La Trobe is a world-class research university and it will become a world-class research university with a deep engagement with industry', Professor Nugent said.

'La Trobe is determined that its PhD graduates will be prepared for a role in industry. This is an imperative!  We are instituting changes through our new Graduate Research School to make this happen. Relationships such as the one just launched are key to ensuring that La Trobe's is preparing a workforce for the future.'

The La Trobe University Branch Kyushu University Institute of Mathematics for Industry will not only be a home for new appointees, but will become a base for visiting Kyushu professors and students.

The process is underway to make joint appointments of English-speaking academics who can later work in Kyushu after fixed term appointments at La Trobe.
