Pre-teen inventor wows crowds

Year 5 Girton Grammar student Xavier Dole has wowed engineering industry heavyweights at a La Trobe University Showcase in Melbourne. His invention prevents people from locking babies and pets in hot cars.

Xavier's 'I Can't Leave' (ICL) safety feature prevents car's central locking systems from working while there's a person or animal inside. The system was designed to prevent deaths and serious injury to children and pets left in hot cars.

Between 1 September 2013 and 31 August 2014, Ambulance Victoria paramedics rescued 1,165 children who had been left unattended in a car. The summer months were the busiest period with an average of four call outs to a child left unattended in a car per day.

Xavier's invention was exhibited recently during the 22nd Annual Engineering and IT Showcase at La Trobe University's Melbourne Campus.

Eddie Custovic, La Trobe University Engineering Lecturer and Showcase Coordinator said the Showcase provided an opportunity for talented primary and secondary school students to display inventions alongside the very best La Trobe University student projects.

'Xavier is incredibly talented. His emphasis on technology and problem solving is a real standout at his age.

'We can't wait to see what he does next.'
