La Trobe University Vice-Chancellor Professor John Dewar, said today's announcement was the result of a long campaign by the University for the service and was exciting news for the many students, staff and on-campus partners who travel to the main Melbourne Campus at Bundoora campus by public transport each day.
'We know that Bundoora campus students, staff and on-campus partners are currently faced with poor and confusing public transport options and longer travel times compared to those travelling to other metropolitan Melbourne universities,' Professor Dewar said.
Improved travel times
'Today's announcement by the Shadow Minister for Public Transport that an Andrews Labor Government will partner with La Trobe to co-fund the 18-month trial of the shuttle bus service will go a long way towards improving overall student and staff journey times between Melbourne's CBD and the University's Melbourne campus at Bundoora, and will help reduce connection times between trains.
'La Trobe University has been advocating for some time for the need to establish this high frequency express shuttle bus service to ensure students, staff and our on-campus partners have a frequent and reliable bus service where and when they need it,' Professor Dewar said.
'We thank our local Labor Members of Parliament – Colin Brooks MP, Anthony Carbines MP, Lily D'Ambrosio MP and Danielle Green MP – who have been strong advocates for this service.
'We also call on the Napthine Government to make the same commitment if they are re-elected at the upcoming November 29 poll,' Professor Dewar said.
