Dr Peter Brukner joins La Trobe

There is a new face on campus.

Australian cricket team doctor and world renowned specialist sports physician Dr Peter Brukner is joining La Trobe in an Honorary Professorial role with the School of Allied Health.

Dr Brukner is the founding partner of the Olympic Park Sports Medicine Centre and a Past President of the Australasian College of Sports Physicians.

He said the appointment was a perfect match.

'La Trobe is a world leader in sport physiotherapy and is known for its high quality clinicians and researchers. In my new role I hope to add to this, using my experience to help promote sports medicine within the university and through teaching.'     

Dr Brukner is the co-author of the widely used text book Clinical Sports Medicine.He has been team physician for the Socceroos at the 2010 World Cup as well as national athletics, swimming, and men's hockey teams at the Olympic and Commonwealth Games.  

Vice Chancellor Professor John Dewar said Dr Brukner's appointment is a coup for the University.

'Dr Brukner is among the best in the world in his field as a specialist sports and exercise physician. His expertise is in demand from elite sports teams and athletes. La Trobe Allied Health students and staff will benefit greatly from his experience.'    

Dr Bruckner will accompany the Australian Cricket team to Zimbabwe later in the year for the one day series before returning to Melbourne and La Trobe.

 'I am excited about this appointment at La Trobe and looking forward to helping educate and mentor the next generation of sports medicine practitioners.'  

The appointment underpins one of the University's key Research Focus Areas of sport, exercise and rehabilitation.
