Science symposium to launch LIMS
To accompany the launch of the $100 million La Trobe Institute for Molecular Science (LIMS) building complex, the University is to host a symposium on the afternoon of the launch, Friday 15 February 2013.
Speakers at the symposium include world-renowned researchers from overseas and from within the research staff at LIMS and La Trobe University.
Professor Ulrich Hartl from the Max Planck Institute for Biochemistry in Germany and Professor So Iwata from the Imperial College in London will give keynote addresses at the symposium.
Professor Hartl was a recipient of the highly respected Lasker Prize in 2011. Both researchers are in Australia to present at the annual Lorne Conference on Protein Structure and Function, and are generously donating their time to present at the LIMS symposium.
One of the local researchers presenting at the symposium is Professor Emma Whitelaw, the newly appointed Director of LIMS. Professor Whitelaw’s research is in the field of epigenetics, a fascinating area that deals with heritable changes in gene expression not involving changes to the underlying DNA.
Professor Whitelaw’s research focuses on understanding the complex gene-environment interactions that cause diseases such as obesity, heart disease, diabetes and foetal alcohol syndrome.
The symposium is the outcome of a high level of interest in the new LIMS complex from within Australia’s scientific community.
Professor Nick Hoogenraad, Executive Director of LIMS at La Trobe University, says that the symposium is an opportunity for the scientific community to not only hear from some world-renowned scientists but also to see the splendid new LIMS complex.
