Mid-year uni entry expands horizons

Rural and regional Victorians who have been considering higher education are being urged to expand their horizons and check out the opportunities for mid-year entry to university study.

Shaun Mackrell also happens to be an award winning photographer. Here he is at an exhibition in Federation Square, Melbourne.Mid-year entry has brought significant benefits to two students at La Trobe University’s Bendigo campus.

An unexpected redundancy in April 2012 left Daniel Spark wondering what to do. He had planned to start university in 2013 after his wife had graduated.

‘The loss of my job really threw a spanner in the works. My wife and I had a very definite plan of what we were going to do and when. Thanks to the flexibility of enrolling mid-year at La Trobe I was able to enrol and get a head start on my degree. Instead of waiting around for six months I am now a half a year closer to my dream job.’

Currently undertaking a Bachelor of Urban Rural and Environmental Planning, Daniel was amazed by the support he received from La Trobe staff.

‘I never felt like I was behind the students who started first semester. The staff were all understanding of my position and went to great lengths to ensure that I was up to speed with my studies.’

Student Shaun Mackrell already had one degree under his belt and was undertaking postgraduate studies with another university when he made the decision to return to La Trobe to do a Bachelor of Strategic Communications

‘I was a semester into my post-graduate studies when I realised that it wasn’t taking me in the direction I needed. It was a hard decision to switch back to another undergraduate degree, but it probably has to be one of the smartest decisions I have made to date.

‘I started by making contact with a La Trobe career advisor, I really needed to work through where I wanted to get. My advisor really helped by setting out a clear career path,’ said Shaun.  Shaun said lecturers and support staff were most helpful though the enrolment process.

‘They assisted me set out my degree and get a handle on what I would be studying and where it would get me. A year later and I have had so many opportunities to network and work with the community.

‘I have even started working in my chosen field.’  For more information on how you can take advantage of La Trobe University’s mid-year entry click here.
