It also rates among the top 200 world universities for the proportion of international staff and students.

Vice-Chancellor Professor John Dewar says the rankings were a notable achievement. There are about 8,000 universities world-wide, of which a total of 2,858 were evaluated for the latest QS World University Rankings

‘It is an extremely solid base in this highly challenging education environment on which to build our new Future Ready strategy, which is to be among the best universities for teaching and research so we can help address issues of fundamental importance to the future of human societies,’ he said.

Executive Dean of Humanities and Social Sciences, Professor Tim Murray, says La Trobe’s Arts and Humanities overall faculty rankings have jumped from 217 in 2012 to 164 this year.

‘This is a significant increase of 53 points. It is further confirmation of our growing strength, underpinned by world-class research and internationally recognized staff in those disciplines that are being evaluated.’

QS (Quacquarelli Symonds), which publishes the rankings, is a leading international provider of higher education and careers information, and independent research.

Five La Trobe subject areas are ranked among the world’s top 100 in the QS survey: History and Archaeology, Linguistics, Education and Training, Communication and Media Studies – with Sociology topping the list in 43rd place.

Accounting and Psychology were ranked in the top 150 with Law and Legal Studies, Philosophy and English Language and Literature achieving rankings in the top 200.

Executive Dean of the Faculty Business, Economics and Law, Professor Leigh Drake, said the success of Accounting and Finance and the ranking of La Trobe’s Law School among the top 200 Law Schools was an extremely pleasing result.

‘The high standard of teaching, learning and research amongst our staff improves each year and our increased ranking in international polls such as QS reflect the great work being undertaken by all.’
