The partnership arrangement will see La Trobe work with the AFL Players Association on key research across a variety of sport related disciplines, including coaching, physiotherapy, psychology, exercise physiology, journalism, management and nutrition, highlighting sport as one of the University’s important components.

The Players’ Association will work with La Trobe’s academic group and student body to help grow the Players’ Association brand while also affirming La Trobe’s Elite Athlete Friendly University status.

Professor John Rosenberg, Senior Deputy Vice Chancellor at La Trobe University said, 'The partnership with the AFL Players’ Association is very exciting for La Trobe as it will materially contribute to our goal to be the number one sport university in the nation. The research and internship opportunities, along with the association with AFL Players’ Association programs provides unique opportunities to showcase our expertise in areas such as sport management, athlete welfare and support, and sport science that sets La Trobe apart from other universities.'

La Trobe University has developed a specialised unit called La Trobe Sport that will drive the University's vision to be the University of first choice for the study of, participation in and partnering in sport in Australia, specifically:

  • To be the leading university in Australia in teaching and research related to sport
  • To support student sport and sport related clubs to increase student participation in sport
  • To actively engage the local community and schools through the use of sporting facilities and sport services at La Trobe
  • To leverage sports facilities to encourage all members of the University to improve their health and fitness
  • To secure long-term, meaningful institutional influence within the sport industry in Victoria and Australia
  • To develop links between high performance sport and the teaching and research capacity of the University
AFL Players’ Association CEO, Matt Finnis said 'La Trobe have committed to supporting our player programs pathway into degree courses – boasting an array of sports oriented courses from sports journalism, administration, management, psychology, physiotherapy and physiology.'

'The University has recently created “La Trobe Sport” to showcase and build their expertise and promote the credentials of La Trobe University in this industry.  If their commitment to broader sport follows the initiative they have already shown in AFL, then it will be an unrivalled success.'

Professor Russell Hoye, Director of La Trobe Sport, noted that the 'AFL Players’ Association and La Trobe share the goal of making a substantial contribution to the ongoing sustainability of the Australian sport industry and the welfare of all its participants from grassroots to elite athletes'.

The La Trobe University is extremely proud of the partnership with the AFL Players’ Association and looks forward to maximising the benefits to both organisations over the next three years.
